Environmentally-Friendly Transit
The transit system buses in Monroe, Louisiana are on their routes with a more environmentally friendly presence. The buses are using biodiesel, a new alternative fuel made from soybean oil, that reduces dangerous emissions.Monroe’s buses started with a 5 percent blend. This week they move to 10 percent and even more lately.Biodiesel will replace 36,000 gallons of the system's traditional fuel every year. It will not cut fuel cost, however, as the price of biodiesel is close to regular diesel fuel."We do save in the long run on maintenance cost," says Monroe transit system general manager Joseph Comerford. The soybean oil in biodiesel acts as a solvent, extending the life of parts inside the bus' motor. All soybeans used in Monroe’s biodiesel comes from Louisiana, which will benefit the state's economy. To watch the video, please click the play icon in the video box to the right.
