Avoid Luggage Loss!

Last year was one of the most frustrating for airline passengers. The U.S. Department of Transportation says lost, stolen or even misplaced luggage by baggage handlers reached a 16-year high!

Today Show Travel Editor Peter Greenberg doesn't pull any punches when it comes to lost luggage. He hasn't checked a bag in eight years.

Greenberg recommends shipping your bags to your destination through Fed Ex or another carrier.

If that doesn't work for you, and you want to take a chance with the airlines, make sure your luggage is clearly marked on the inside and out.

Greenberg recommends putting your name and telephone number on two separate tags on two locations outside the bag. Then put the same information on the inside of the bag, in case the conveyor belts rip off the outside tags.

Another option: Pack light and put everything into a carry-on bag -- but remember, there are restrictions when it comes to liquids.

Greenberg's advice? Leave your lotions and potions at home -- you can buy what you need when you arrive.

Greenberg also suggests that you open your luggage before you leave the airport to make sure nothing is missing or damaged. If the airline loses your luggage, do not leave the baggage counter without getting the direct number to that baggage counter. Don't call the 800 number that the airline will give you! Call the baggage counter directly to check on the status of your bags.
