Outrageous Airfares
Airfares for five cents? Sometimes just a penny? How in the world can Spirit Airlines sell seats for pocket change?According to Spirit Airlines CEO Ben Baldanza, "We take a severe cost focus on everything we do. We say how can we do it a little bit better and a little bit cheaper?"When Spirit Airlines introduced the first non-stop service from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Martin, many of the passengers got their seats for less than ten dollars. It used to cost hundreds of dollars to get to St. Martin from Florida. But if you sign up for special email alerts from Spirit Airlines, you'll get the alerts of drastic fare cuts -- even the exact day and time to start booking. In a conference room at Spirit Airline headquarters, the sales team comes up with these crazy airfares to serve one purpose:"People talk about us. We get a lot of buzz. Nobody's going to do that with a ho hum kind of sale, but pennies get people talking," says Baldanza.Airfares are so crazy, comedians joke about them. You're probably wondering how many seats are really going for that ultra-low price. Spirit says they try to sell 20 to 40 seats for the lowest price on every flight. The airline saves money by flying fuel-efficient planes. And by using customized pricing, the fare just gets you a seat and nothing else. Checking bags, food and drinks costs you extra. If you book a one cent or fie cent airfare, you still have to pay the government taxes and fees, so your airfare may be around 40 or 50 dollars -- still better than most other airlines. To watch the video, please click the play icon in the video box to the right.
