Earthquakes can strike almost anywhere, and when they do, the devastation can be massive.

In 1961, a 9.5-magnitude earthquake in Chile actually changed the landscape. The force of the quake caused landslides that clogged rivers and created new lakes and streams.

And in 1994, a modest 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Northridge area of Los Angeles, causing thousands of injuries and billions of dollars of damage. To this day, it is the costliest earthquake to ever hit the United States.

Mike McKee from the University of Central Florida has more on some of the most memorable quakes across the globe.
