Farming For Electricity

Huge windmills reaching 380 feet into the sky rise out of the wetlands along the New Jersey coastline.

These windmills are generating electricity. It only takes a wind of 12 mph to generate electricity at 100% capacity.

A growing number of wind farms are sprouting up around the country as energy companies look for additional sources of energy.

Wind farms create energy for electricity without creating air or water pollution.

Power companies get most of their electricity from generating plants that burn coal or gas, or rely on nuclear or hydro generation. Critics say all those sources adversely affect the environment in some way.

But wind power has no byproduct to affect the environment.

Some power companies are now giving customers the option of choosing the source of the electricity they buy.

And wind power is saving some people money. Some wind farms generate power just for their community. A county water treatment plant outside of Atlantic City has its own wind farm and last year, wind-generated power saved the plant more than $400,00 in electric bills.

That savings was passed onto the plant's consumers.

Windmills will never replace coal, gas or nuclear power, but the goal is that someday wind farms will contribute 20% of our energy needs.
