If you work unusual hours or travel long distances frequently, you know your sleep can be disrupted. Now a new study says melatonin might help you get the rest you need.Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body at night to help regulate sleep cycles. If you work overnight, or if you cross time zones frequently, your melatonin production decreases. Researchers believe this is due to light exposure.Many people take a melatonin supplement as a way to improve their sleep, though studies on its effectiveness have been mixed.Now a new study may clear up the confusion. The study finds that melatonin works best if you take it when your body isn't making it: when you're awake.Keep in mind that over-the-counter melatonin supplements are not regulated by the government in the same way as prescription drugs.
